The 2020 Chinese New Year falls on January 25th and is on the Metal Rat.
The calendar and the zodiac are two related components of Chinese tradition. The calendar is lunar, and its distribution with the zodiac is in 12-year cycles – each year is a different combination between an animal and an element.
The calendar consists of two overlapping systems – the Twelve Earthly Branches and the Ten Heavenly Stems.
The “Ten Heavenly Stems” consist of 5 elements: metal, wood, water, fire and earth. Each of the elements belongs to Yin or Yang (feminine or masculine origin/energy; both polarities). Thus everything is locked into a ten-year cycle.
When the 12 signs are aligned with the 5 elements and the Yin-Yang aragement, the result is a calendar with 60-years of different combinations (aprox. 13 million variations). For example, Fire Monkey, Water Rooster, Metal Rat, etc.
The cycle begins with the Rat and ends with the Pig and the elements are according to the years in the cycle.
A Little information about the Zodiac in the Chinese Calendar
The Big Race
Legend has it about the Jade Emperor who was looking for a way to measure time. Thus organizing The Big Race and the first 12 animals that reach the final in the sequence that each one completes, will have the honor of being mentioned on the calendar.
The Rat got up early to take advantage of the early start, but on the way to the river he met a buffalo, a horse and a tiger. The rat asked them for help crossing the river, but the tiger and the horse refused, then the buffalo agreed and crossed the river together. But before the buffalo reached the shore, the rat jumped from it and finished first in the race and the buffalo second.
The tiger arrived third, and the rabbit hopping on rocks and floating logs fourth. The though able to fly the distance the dragon stopped to help other creatures along the way, so he finished fifth.
The horse galloped across the river and when he reached land, the snake rushed before him.
On a floating log, the rooster, the monkey, and the goat were coming. When they arrived, everyone agreed that the next place would be for the goat, which was so good to everyone, followed by the monkey and the rooster.
The dog swam to eleventh place and the twelfth was the pig, which slowed down because it ate and dozed before finishing.
